I was recently in New York City, sharing the details of the juvenile justice reform bill I sponsored this year (2014's SB200) with legislators from across the country - I'm proud to say it has become a national model for reform.  While I was there I took time to visit the 9/11 Memorial for the first time.  What a somber and solemn place.  The rose in the photo below wasn't there at one moment and suddenly appeared the next - as if visiting the site alone wasn't enough, the rose brought my visit to a halt and compelled a moment of reflection about what happened there and the emotions of those who live here that I had only ever observed from a distance.

For all of the sorrow experienced here, hope remains and is remembered by the Survivor Tree (also below), the only tree that isn't a white oak, that was saved from the site in 2001 and nursed back to health.  You can see it continues to grow - the tree alone is arguably the coolest site to see in all of New York City.
